Green Waste Removal in Shellharbour and Albion Park

The part nobody quotes for on a Saturday

You take a day off, borrow a chainsaw, and by three o'clock the tree is down. Then you look at the pile. What was a neat green thing standing against the fence is now a chest-high tangle of limbs across half the yard, and the FOGO bin is already full from the lawn.

This is the bit that catches people out on Shellharbour's blocks — the tidy 500-square-metre lots through Oak Flats, Mount Warrigal and Barrack Heights, where there is no back paddock to drag it to and the verge is not a storage solution. A single mature camphor laurel or a run of lilly pilly hedge along a shared boundary can be four or five trailer loads. Trees near Blackbutt Forest Reserve and the older streets around Lake Illawarra have had decades to get big.

Green waste removal is simply this: the debris leaves with the crew, and the yard looks like nothing happened.

What the green bin will and will not swallow

Shellharbour runs a combined FOGO service — food organics and garden organics together in the green-lidded bin — and what goes in is reprocessed into compost and mulch at Council's own FOGO facility (Shellharbour Waste — FOGO bin).

That is a good system for ordinary garden upkeep. It is not a tree service.

Fine for the green bin: grass clippings, leaves, weeds, light prunings, small twigs.

Not realistic: trunk sections, anything thicker than your wrist in quantity, palm fronds by the dozen, a whole hedge trim, or a storm-damaged limb. The bin has a volume limit and a weight limit, the lid must close, and a fortnightly collection is not going to keep pace with a tree job. Overfilling it usually means it gets skipped, and then you have the pile and no bin.

Doing it yourself — the honest maths

Self-haul is a real option and worth pricing.

Dunmore Recycling and Waste Disposal Depot is owned and operated by Shellharbour City Council and accepts waste, recycling and organics from residents. Published operating hours are Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4pm, and weekends and public holidays 8am to 4pm, and the site is cashless — cards only, American Express excluded (Shellharbour Waste — Dunmore Depot). Gate charges apply and are reviewed, so confirm current rates before you go.

What people underestimate is not the tip fee. It is the loading. Green waste is bulky and springy — a trailer takes far less than it looks like it should, wet foliage is heavy, and every load is a round trip out to Dunmore plus the unload. Three loads is most of a day, and you finish with a scratched car and a sore back.

If the pile is a barrow's worth, do it yourself. If it is a tree, get it chipped.

What a truck-and-chipper job looks like

The efficiency comes from processing the material where it falls.

Chipping on site. Brush and limbs go through a chipper straight into a truck. What was a yard full of branches becomes a fraction of the volume, and the chip is contained rather than blowing down the street.

Timber cut to length. Trunk wood too big to chip is cross-cut and loaded by hand or machine. Some of it is worth keeping if you burn firewood — say so early, because otherwise it goes on the truck.

Barrowed out where access is tight. Plenty of Shellharbour and Warilla blocks have a 900mm side gate and a meter box in the way. When the chipper cannot get to the tree, the tree gets carried to the chipper. Slower, and it is the main thing that moves the price.

Ground protection. Plywood or boards over turf and pavers where a machine or a loaded barrow has to travel, so the clean-up does not create its own damage.

Rake, blow, walk it. Beds raked out, paths and driveway blown, a final walk around the perimeter for the sticks that always end up in the neighbour's garden. The verge is left as it was found — nothing dumped there for "later".

Stump grindings are their own thing. Grinding produces a surprising mound of chip-and-soil mix. It either backfills the hole and gets topped with turf, or it is carted off with the rest. Decide at quote stage — see stump grinding.

Mulch, and the material you should not keep

Keeping the chip is often the smart move. Coastal Shellharbour soils are sandy and free-draining, and a 75mm mulch layer holds moisture through the dry westerly weeks and the salt-laden south-easterlies. Spread it in beds, keep it off trunks and away from the house frame, and it does real work.

There are exceptions worth respecting:

• Camphor laurel is a weed tree across the Illawarra and it seeds prolifically. Chip from a camphor, or from privet, large-leaved privet or self-seeding cocos, is not something to spread through your garden.
• Cocos palm fronds and seed heads are fibrous, chip poorly and carry viable seed. Palm material generally goes on the truck — more on that under palm removal.
• Diseased or fungal-infected wood is not worth recycling onto healthy beds.

Green waste as part of a bigger job — or on its own

Most of the time this is bundled in: a tree removal, a hedge trim or a storm damage clean-up is quoted with the removal of the debris included, and you should always confirm in writing that it is included rather than assumed.

But it is also a standalone job. If you have already done the cutting, or a previous contractor left the pile, or a tenant's clean-out has to be gone by Friday, a crew can come just for the material.
